As you implement the OKR framework, you can immediately recognize its benefits as the four superpowers of OKRs.
Focus – The OKR goal-setting framework depends on 2-3 key objectives (Os). These objectives are connected to time-bound, measurable, and transparent key results (KRs). OKRs enable executives and employees to focus on what they will be working on, inclusive of the reasons behind their working on an objective.
Alignment – Your teams achieve alignment by developing a well-defined set of standards, i.e., Objectives and Key Results. Consider everyone aligned when they are “Thinking and acting in unison towards accomplishing organization’s strategic goals.” A success element of OKRs is that deliberate time and attention are paid to gaining alignment during the planning phase. Each level of the organization sets its OKRs and communicates them down through individuals, teams, and departments to align. As we all row in the same direction, together, we accomplish more.
Rhythm – It is well-embedded into the OKR framework. Rhythm is the organization’s “Developing a strong cadence of action, communication, and accountability to ensure success.” This success superpower of OKR calls for developing the right execution habits to deliver on your focused and aligned objectives and key results. These habits are to have the right conversations to keep employees engaged, provide recognition, and timely feedback. Regular meetings with teams to coach and support them where required also help. To further ramp up your organizational success, work to create the right meetings throughout execution, thus creating a steady and robust battle rhythm towards which you should march.
Agility is the organization’s ability to “Adapt to changing business dynamics quickly and easily.” OKRs for leaders enable them to make their organizations highly agile by shortening the planning phase and doing so more often. It is a good business practice to move from a yearly cycle to a quarterly one. Plan for shorter sprints of focused behavior, reflect and reset. You can thus quickly and easily adapt to changing dynamics over the year.
